Andrés Gutiérrez Martínez is a composer and electronic music performer whose recent work is informed by the perceptual study of timbre and its role in contemporary music. He has a PhD in music composition from the University of California San Diego and has recently accepted a position as Professor for Electroacoustic Composition at the Gustav Mahler Privatuniversität für Musik in Klagefurt, Austria. The writing of this article began during his postdoctoral fellowship in the Music Perception and Cognition Lab led by Stephen McAdams at the Schulich School of Music of McGill University.
