Maureen Wolloshin is an improviser, researcher, composer and oboist. Her improvising extends the timbral range of the oboe and cor anglais. As a result, Henry Dagg has designed and made for her a new instrument–the gliss anglais, which extends the sonic and gestural scope of her work.

Maureen improvises with Kurdish cellist Khabat Abas. In September 2022 she was invited to Sulaymaniah in Kurdistan to participate in Space 21 Festival, a collaboration between Culture Factory Sulaymaniah and Queens University Belfast. The Festival explored three abandoned spaces in the city. The improvisations which emerged were performed in all three spaces at the culmination of the festival. She also performs with Free Range Orchestra, patternBook, and A Priori with Paul Cheneour, Benedict Taylor and David Leahy.

Maureen’s composition explores the connection between notation, touch, and sound. She was commissioned by Electric Medway to compose Learning to Live…again. In July 2022 she was invited to participate in Walking in Air as part of the Folkestone Fringe and Profound Sound Festival with Emmanuelle Waeckerle. In August 2022 she was invited to the Wandelweiser CMC residency. In October 2022 her work was performed as part of the Free Range concert series. She has been invited by Bl!ndman to compose a piece for their percussion quartet and participate in a residency with them in January 2023. Her work is featured in The British Music Collection.

Maureen has been invited to present her research by a number of institutions including but not limited to Laboratorio Audio Visuale in Madrid, Helsinki University for the Arts Gender Study Days, Greenwich University Sound and Image Conference, the RMA Music and/as Process Conference, and at Wintersound Festival by Canterbury Christchurch University and The Orpheus Instituut.
